About The Lavender

Renewingthe Spirit

Reset. Restart. Renew.

Opening Fully in August 2026

We are putting the final touches in place. Check back soon for more.

For more than twenty years I sat across from people the world calls strong.

Executives. Nurses. Teachers. Officers. Pastors. Parents who never get a day off. They walked into my office composed and capable, and most of them were running on empty.

I watched the same thing happen again and again. The people who carry the most are the last ones allowed to set anything down. We praise them while they are useful and forget them the moment they start to fall apart. I could not keep watching it and do nothing.

I am a counselor by training and a teacher by instinct. My work has always lived where education, mental health, and the body meet. Hypnotherapy taught me a truth I come back to every day. The body holds what the mind cannot say out loud. You can talk through a hard week. You cannot talk your way out of a nervous system that has been stuck in survival mode for years.

The Lavender is my answer to all of it. Two nights on the water in St. Thomas. A licensed therapist in your corner. A space built so the people who give everything can finally stop, breathe, and remember who they are underneath the role.

They did not need more coping strategies. They needed permission to stop, and a beautifully safe place to do it. Dr. Melinda D. Richards, Ed.D., LPC, CHt · Founder

Dr. Melinda D. Richards

Dr. Richards has spent her career where education, clinical mental health, and whole person healing meet. That intersection is exactly where The Lavender lives. She is a Doctor of Education, a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Trans-personal Hypnotherapist, a Nationally Certified Addictions Counselor, and a Board Certified Tele-Mental Health Practitioner.

Her credentials are not for show. Every part of the retreat, from the Butterfly Chair session to the breathwork to the scent of each room, is built on what she has learned over decades of clinical and classroom work.

Educator first

She earned a B.A. in Psychology from Northern Illinois University, an M.A. in Human Resource Development from Bowie State University, an Education Specialist degree, and a Doctor of Education from Argosy University, where she graduated at the top of her class. She knows how high pressure environments wear people down from the inside, because she has taught and counseled inside them.

A first responder in mental health

Long before burnout became a popular word, she was already on the front lines. She provided crisis level care in outpatient behavioral health across Georgia, Illinois, and the US Virgin Islands, working with children, teens, adults, couples, and families in real distress. She built The Lavender so they would have somewhere softer to land.

Certified hypnotherapist

As a Certified Trans-personal Hypnotherapist, she uses tools that reach beneath ordinary talk therapy. At The Lavender this shapes the sensory design of every experience. The scent sequences, the sound therapy, and the Butterfly Chair session all move guests out of survival mode and into real rest.

Community practitioner

Through RTS Services Unlimited II, known as Renewing The Spirit, and her nonprofit Passport 2 Prosperity, Inc., she has served the Virgin Islands community since 2019. Her work brings together feeding programs, behavioral health access, and whole health care so that nutrition, mental health, and medical support stay connected.

What she saw, and why she acted

Two decades of practice showed her a pattern she could not unsee. The people who take care of everyone else are almost never invited into the conversation about rest. They are admired for how much they can endure and left alone when that endurance finally gives out.

Her training tells her where this leads. Anxiety. Strained relationships. Physical illness. A slow loss of the person you used to be. The Lavender exists to step in long before any of that becomes the story.

Every experience is chosen, not improvised

Nothing here is decorative. Each part of the day was selected for a clinical reason, then shaped to feel like rest rather than work.

Morning restoration

Sunrise reflection, a lavender walking trail, gentle therapeutic stretch, and guided breathwork that reintroduce the nervous system to a slower pace. Citrus, eucalyptus, and peppermint signal that you are awake without rushing you.

Afternoon grounding

Aqua therapy, stone discovery on the beach, expressive writing, and creative healing through painting and vision boards. The body and the creative process do work that words alone cannot reach.

Evening release

A sound bath with healing frequencies, scripture and quiet reflection, and an aromatherapy shower of lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood. A clinically informed wind down that readies the body for deep, restorative sleep.

A clinical thread throughout

A licensed therapist leads the Butterfly Chair session. Validated assessments, guided journaling, and a follow up therapist session give the retreat lasting value, not just relief in the moment.
